Heavy Metal: heavy metal is also known as 'classic' or 'pure' metal. Black
Sabbath is said to be the first, and then it caught on with other bands. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal almost disappeared
when thrash metal came into the scene.

Nu Metal: Rap influened hard rock bands. Hip hop groove
and repetitive guitar lines are almost a must. Vocalists tend to snarl or shout lyrics, some even rapping. Nu metal has become
the most popular genre, but by true metalheads, it is the most hated.
bands: Korn, Slipknot, Deftones, System of a Down, Godsmack
Symphonic Metal: Usually
isn't it's own style, but mixed with others. Can be a real orchestra, or symphonic sounding keyboards.

Doom metal: stresses emotion. mystery, heavyness, sadness, depression
and melancholy. Eminates a dark atmosphere. Black Sabbath is said to be the beginning. sorrow, hopelessness, hatred and despair.

Glam/Hair metal: aka: cheese metal or commercial
metal. term given to hard rock bands of the '80s. visually identifiable by long hair, leather jackets, lipstick, torn jeans,
and skanky women. Based on image, a lot like today's nu metal. When it got started, a talented bands were out there,
but then they got popular and dozens of unoriginal copy cats ran with their shit. This got old pretty quickly and it's now
pretty much passe.
*As music evolves, bands that were once considered metal
(twisted sister, guns n' roses, ozzy osbourne) are now considered hard rock. They were at one time considered heavy, so they
still fall into that genre.
