Death metal: Started as a harsher, faster, more intense version of thrash. It evolved into a
higher level of complexity. Probably the harshest metal genre. Vocals are growled, shrieked, and screamed.

Black Metal: Exceedingly fast tempos, aural ambience. Imagery is very important. Satanic or Anti-Christian
lyrics and imagery. Vocals are shrieked, but often accompanied by chanting or soprano vocals.
Bands: Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Marduk, Emperor, Burzum
Grindcore: began as ultra-fast, raw, agrresive version of underground punk. Lyrics
deal w/ political and social issues. Also with gore films or other obscene themes.

Thrash Metal: Combines tempos of early hardcore punk with
rigidity of heavy metal. Songs are usually complex. De-emphasizes melody in order to incorperate intense, driving rhythms. Music
is angry and aggresive with lyrics based on politics, social issues, religion, and occult themes. Vocals are yelled, spat
or snarled, though sometimes melodic.

Speed metal: Crosses British heavy metal with hardcore
punk. Extremely fast, abrasive and technically demanding with a do-it-yourself attitude.
